P.S the Delgado pic is kind of interesting, because a few of his 'Pinarello's' had these weird aluminium lugs... esp around '88. http://elvinosaurio.blogspot.co.uk/2013 ... s-rex.html (a few pics down).

Edit: I think there are not so many hard and fast rules on the Montello, the one in your pic has a different rear cable stop for the rear mech, if they were building lots and they ran out of bits, they were going to change a few, plus they changed the build a few times with different parts. One thing, ride it, it should be razor sharp handling and really nice to ride, they are great bikes, I miss mine, although its not far away, in storage.

Good luck with it. I still have money sitting by for the right one, but its been a lot of searching and no luck as yet. There is a lot of poor examples out there and they are old so make sure its sound.

I've been a good student and done my homework... Now in order to decide whether it really is a Montello I'm planning to ask for photos of:

1. the head tube, head-on (decal may help identify the year)
2. the section of the down tube where the DA selectors are attached (again, there may be a decal that could narrow down the vintage)
3. top of the seat stays, where they are brazed onto the seat post, which on a Montello should probably have GPT logos
4. underside of BB, to see if there's a serial number and the name Pinarello

Will keep you all posted!

That frame looks like a TVT or similar bonded frame. A lot lighter than a comparable steel frame and possibly used for mountain stages.

The owner of the Pinarello has now kindly sent me some more photos to help answer the question: Montello, yay or nay?

It seems to me that the answer has to be nay... We get the GPT logos on the seat stays, but not on top of the BB. Also, the bridge between the chain stays is un-Montello-like The seat tube says Treviso so it could just be that... Yet Trevisos AFAIK had Columbus SL tubing, not SLX. Also, did Trevisos ever come with chrome seat and chain stays?

Whatever the model, the sticker on the headtube does suggest an early 80s build, compare http://www.lejog4amr.co.uk/pinarello/montellos.shtml

Hi, I am pretty sure that is an Asolo.

Those are made of Columbus Cromor tubing as is shown on the forks.
I have just picked up the same frame only without the Columbus decals.

Nice bike but having looked at a number of them, I wouldn't be convinced its a Montello, If the price is right it may well be a very nice bike.

Nice Parts, but it may have had a replacement decal set as they are prone to light damage.

Asolo as stated above?

I just bought mine as a complete bike with a shimano 600 tricolor group for €125.
Frame and decals are in very good condition, just need to rechrome the forks.

Thanks Timelab. Good to know I didn't fall into the trap of paying over the odds for this one. Just seen parts 1 and 2 of your restoration vid as well -- very nice job you did, both on the bike and on the video!
