I have been running BOINC for quite a while, but started with SETI in 1999 (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence), don't laugh it's a serious project analysing the phenominal amount of radio waves received on earth from outer space, (I believe this is the first project of it's kind). I first got involved with this project while I was a student, as i found the idea of mass computing power very appealing.
When SETI moved to the BOINC network I started other projects also, probably of more merit to be honest, like cancer / HIV research. I like BOINC as now with dual CPU's you can have multiple projects running and pick and choose what you want to donate your computing time to.
I think this is such a worthwhile idea for everyone, and yes it costs money as my comp is on 24 / 7 running at 100% CPU so there are electricity costs, but this is my contribution to charity.
So who else runs these sort of programs, how long you been at it and what got you involved?
Here's a screen shot of what i'm currently running.
