More about the World Community Grid here http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

I have been running BOINC for quite a while, but started with SETI in 1999 (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence), don't laugh it's a serious project analysing the phenominal amount of radio waves received on earth from outer space, (I believe this is the first project of it's kind). I first got involved with this project while I was a student, as i found the idea of mass computing power very appealing.

When SETI moved to the BOINC network I started other projects also, probably of more merit to be honest, like cancer / HIV research. I like BOINC as now with dual CPU's you can have multiple projects running and pick and choose what you want to donate your computing time to.

I think this is such a worthwhile idea for everyone, and yes it costs money as my comp is on 24 / 7 running at 100% CPU so there are electricity costs, but this is my contribution to charity.

So who else runs these sort of programs, how long you been at it and what got you involved?

Here's a screen shot of what i'm currently running.

There are certain research projects, like running different models for a cancer cure, or analysing lots of radio waves to find ET, but they require HUGE computing power.

With BOINC, the huge amount of data is broken into little chunks, sent out to people computers to crunch over then sent back.

Not the best explanation :?

maybe have a read here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

BOINCing for a long time, but was FADing inbetween and a few others.

Had my toe in the development helping out (no serious development)

the for a few years I've got bored with it and rarely run it (not good for my laptops)

Yeah I run SETI now too... have been for a few years now, I think somewhere around 1995/1996 I started (when I had Red Hat 5.2 running on my Server).

I now have BOINC running on a Windows 2003 Server machine, but I'm switching to Debian 5 in a few weeks... have set it up, but can't quite figure out how to run the console client from BOINC (I don't have X or a WM on the machine, just base install, Apache and PHP). Somthing with a key the want to verify my I believe.

Only time I got it connecting I got a "No work to be done" message :) Will look into that some other time, now I just need to figure out what Server to use since I have three (ML330 G3, ML350 G3 and an xServer 235).

Anyhoo, bottom line is: Yeah I run BOINC too ;-)

I think I understand most of that :)

Nice to see some Retro Bikers using BOINC though, its a brilliant use of spare computing power.

SETI for at least 10 years, now moved to BOINC, was in big teams on both but now both teams have dwindled to next to nothing but i'm still crunching work units :)

Easy Rider are you in a team?

Maybe we could start a RetroBike BOINC team?

(Oooohhhh did I say that out loud    )

RetroBOINC i love it :D

I'm in OcUK for SETI but don't mind leaving that, haven't been on the forums for years.
