John-57

Retro Newbie
Please can anyone help. The crank has broke i.e the pedals turn on crank but the three cogs do not.Taken to Russels bike shop and he is having trouble getting a replacement.Anyone where or what type of parts needed to replace.Regards John.

From memory Mustangs were fitted with cheap one piece BMX cranks rather than a BB and separate crankset.

Something like this could be what you're looking for:

Thank you for your quick reply. But the mustang I have has a square tappered crank with a pedal arms about 170mm.The crank shaft is fine,it`s the cogs that are no longer fixed to anything.

If the chain rings are no longer attached then you need new cranks surely.

Surely just get a replecement crankset and matching BB if the crankset need a BB axle length that is not in your bike currently.

Spot on that`s why I took it to the LBS rang him after a week to see how he was getting on told having problems getting replacement.

I`m hoping to use this topic for suggestions of which crank sets are out there that can be used,so I can give these to the lad in the LBS.As I want to try get the bike back and riding again.

How old is the Mustang? We had a fairly modern one in the shop for repair yesterday, with suspension and everything. I was shocked that they still make them.

Surely you can use just about any square taper crank on it? Don't see a problem there, it might be that they're having trouble with the old Raleigh BB as suggested above. If it's been in the frame for 30-odd years chances are it needed looking at. It's true that it can be difficult to get the parts to repair older, lower end (no offence) bikes so bare with your LBS.

Hi the bike is from about 88 it`s the white and pink,The crank was serviced two months ago.The LBS have said what some of the crank sets they tried are to wide throwing the chain off line with the rear cogs.So am hoping that someone somewhere will know a make of crank set that will work.So I can pass the information on to them.Regards John.
