Have I set my brakes up wrong on my Kona ??

Re:

Granted it does look a bit like a bodge but that's the way they came! As others have said, rotating the collar a little might help with centering but will also increase friction on the cable.....probably

Re:

I use that plastic sheathing sometimes too, but I usually pinch it out of dad's shed... That probably means that you can buy it from modelling shops! :D

Here is a photo of the setup now... works better but still not happy ....
I thought most Kona had dog collars and I can not see how they could have used such a bad setup?
Going to try with a set of Odessey Straddle this weekend to see if it helps... If not then it might have to be V brakes
Also a photo of the earlier plastic hanger where it aligns the cable in the middle
No, stop faffing and trying to make it pull up at the centre, use a normal everyday hanger and it'll find the best position, making it pull at the centre just makes the left side cable loose its tension.

If it's good enough for some higher end frame makers its probably good enough for kona.

Will go back and try a normal hanger and see how it goes ...Currently with the Point hanger the brakes are not working too bad and cable now has some tension ..

Re:

The hanger doesn't need to be a lot of centre so if you use the clamping style then you just need to align it a touch of centre. The Shimano just need a bit more on the adjustable side than the tube makes it have.

You're basically pivoting or pushing the left side a bit before it find its effective centre point.
Its just easier to use a normal hanger let it find it position once the cables have bedded in and have nice sharp angles and straight cables. Then switch to the other setups and replicate it.

It's not far off centre so the brakes will work as is, just not as nice as the should be.

The advantages of the setup are you don't have the friction from the cables and double/triple turns that are often quite sharp of the small cable stretch.

Itnay of course be other parr of your setup making it feel wrong, slack levers, poor pads/pad setup.
