Has XC MTB racing died ????

can't really comment as the last nat xc race i did was nottingham 92, however, has recently become re aquainted with my training partner from bitd & he has been racing again, this as last winter he is campaining a 'dale m700 cira 1991 with skinny knobblies on it in the vets class & doing quite well. he tells me that cx fields are bigger than xc, that xc are a lot smaller than we remember. we used to do a fair few cx races in the early 90's for something to do on a sunday, & to upset the local roadies by stealing thier prize money "ON A BLOODY MOUNTAINBIKE!" good fun....

Firstly hello (i'm a noob!) I was racing XC in the early 90's and it was great fun, i agree with what somebody said about the level of tech on the bikes e.g Brakes! it was fun to watch and ride. I did a race last year and it was no where near as friendly as what it used to be bitd. For some reason (lard!) i started DH racing around 2001, you don't have to be fit to race, just have the skill (ahem, Balls) to not use your brakes and get down quicker. I agree it is not as much fun to watch even after my run i wouldn't bother to go back up to the course to watch! Lets all started XC racing again and get it popular again.

As said above enduros are really taking off instead of shorter X number of lap races. 2hr, 4hr and even 6 hr races are becoming the norm. Very well supported even at a local level. There are more 12hr / 24 hr races then ever. The future is bright, the future is enduro.

Totally agree, I think I do more enduros & 12/24 hr races now than ever.

TBH I love them, short course XC doesn't suit my riding style at all, get fed up being held up on the downhills/tech sections and it seems that races are won/lost on the start.

I'd still think XC racing is a part of the sport which hasn't changed that much over the years though, even down to the posers on uber expensive bikes and with silly expensive modes of transport!

Just back in from the after race BBQ, nothing quite like one of those, and I have this memory of sweet pain and the typical after race glow in my muscles, gfeels like having central heating.

This is the new age so we had all the lap-times and results tabled right there within hours of finishing. I came 5th in my team of 12 weekend warriors, about right in the pecking order, with 3 minutes separating me from 3rd. This 55km race is just under 2,5 hours for me btw. Plus I finished 482 from a starting position of 565, all in all a good day.

Enjoy!!

Mea culpa: this is on a distinctly non retro 29er wide tired disc brake ful sus rig

Got back into racing this year after a 17 year gap, think the last race i did was in 92 ( Rockhopper south series )
Did the Gorrick spring series and am about to do the Autumn series.
Still seems to be as popular as ever, both racers and crowd.
Having just as much fun as i use to and looking forward to Tunnel hill on the 18th.
