How did you restrain the frame - your feet and protection underneath the frame?

My colleague put one foot in the front triangle, one in the rear triangle, then held the toptube and seat cluster, giving 4 reasonably soft contact points.

The forces involved would have broken the frame if we'd clamped it by a tube or bb in the stand

Just because you value the frame more than the seat post it's really just a matter of perspective.

I do wonder about hydraulic solutions - massive smooth force application or smaller shock inputs

Massive shock input was needed here. the smooth force would have broken whatever the equal and opposite end was attached to on the frame
