Thanks guys.. this is more like it..

Not really that bothered about components, just frames..

I need a plan, something to aim for.. and GT's are interesting.

Don't think I'll ever have Zaskar or Xizang money (but bargains do come up sometimes so it's nice to know the top of the range, just in case )

I know it's modern but I like the Aggressor I have now, it's kinda light and 6061.. so I'd like to upgrade the frame to something 'nicer' from the same marque at some point.

It's looking like Avalanche or Karakoram could be where I'll set my sights..

I believe the later GT Aggressor XC and XCR range are a Halfords special. Only available to buy at Halfords it falls into the GT range at about the same level as the Avalanche with the same mixture of components across the range. Earlier Aggressors were available outside of Halfords and had predominantly 7000 framed tubing and were much further down the range than the same year Avalanches which cost nearly twice as much. This was mainly due to components, which on the early Aggressors was terrible.

If you are interested, here's my take on the bouncy rear ended stuff for you. Obviously these frames are an evolution in rear suspension design and can't really be compared to each other so I've separated out the different models. I've listed them in descending order based on frame material and components BUT as these bikes were produced over a number of years components may differ between each year. Frame material varies from Ti, Carbon 6061 / 7000 / 7005 Aluminium and Chromoly. Other than frame material on the higher end frames the main difference between models are Forks, Wheelsets and other components such as XTR, XT, LX, Deore, STX-RC, STX, Alivio, etc

Where does the Aluminium Aggressor fit in??

Not sure, GT seem to do less models now and subdivide the spec levels into numbers. Aggressor 1, 2, 3 etc... instead of calling them different models. I guess the Aggressor is the entry level 'proper' off road frame and covers everything up to the Avalanche from the old model range.

I've changed (read: ditched) most of the components on the Aggressor now.. stem and bars are en-route and then it'll just be the frame and headset that's original.. biding my time for a headset (and want the Bombers replaced in time)..

Can't be dwelling on Pace - it'll just make me unhappy..

you had the non triple Talera , the Outpost and alsorts of low end chuff.

The Talera was always a triple crank, you must mean frame? Yes there was a year maybe two when the Outpost and the Talera had a pierced top tube but no Triple Triangle frame.

My thoughts being 90-97 era it is tDeoough to put in a low, middle top line in a line of bikes that had so many models. We ...speaking those of us that worked around GT's back during the days considered the Tequesta, Timberline, Talera, Outpost and Outpost Trail to be lower end(Aggressor, Tempest and Backwoods were lower Aluminum models. HI-ten steel lower end chromoly mix frames, single wall rims Tourney, Altus, Alivio and STX mix spec.

Borrego, Karakoram, Karakram Elite, Karakoram K2, Corrado, Richter 8.0, Avalanche to be mid level (Pantera, Avalanche AL were mid level aluminum). Double wall rims, Major name tires Suntour XC Expert/comp. Shimano STX-RC, Deore LX with an occassional XT rear Derailleur for spec.

Top end would have been the more Fully XT and XTR equipped models with light double wall rims, kevlar tires Team Avalanche, Bravado (LE), Psyclone in steel frames, (top end aluminum Zaskar and Zaskar LE. Once they were cranking bikes out of Huntington Beach and Longmont (Tech Shop) it had to be a USA made and assembled frame/bike to be considered top end.

So in the hierarchy of Zaskar’s where does the Zaskar X fit in compared to the Zaskar LE and the regular Zaskar?

Zaskar X is one of the last year USA produced frames. So Top but designed for different riding style. The Zaskar model that year was actually made in Taiwan. X and Zaskar Team were USA made. X was a tad different geometry with more fork travel...targeted at a younger freeride/all mountain market not really a true XC design

Just asking out of curiosity really, I quite like it and it's doing its job, for the time being, as a 'stepping stone' while I wait for the right frame (at the right time) ..
