GT family tree.!!!

 Well...gt's of the past have been two timberlines, an edge, a psyclone, a zr 2000, a zr1000....and now a tempest!
However, i cannot find much detail re older gt's..patchy stuff here and there, but no good sites detailing history, spec etc.
In fact....i reckon no one knows the true gt family tree, as no site seems to list everything...thereis always one or two, maybe more!...missing from any list i've seen.
Anyone care to take up this xmas challenge...? :D

But where is 1991 :(

Got to be one of the most important years as the Zaskar came out ;)

Chris you are right about 1991 GT wise. Besides the Zaskar intro, the 700D bikes and Tandems are in there also. So yes a very inportant chunk of GT history. The one I want and can't find anywhere is the complete 1995 catalog. I have the 95 Road Catalog but still need the MTB catalog. It was one of the nicest ones GT ever produced. Great pics on a white background, The Carati version posted on Retrobike is nice it's just not complete.

I have the 1991 USA Catalog all scanned paid $XXX on eBay for it. Let me know what you need and I'll post it?

kevin because its simply a pita to scan this one. its an oversize format - so unless you dont have an oversize scanner (meaning 28x28cm at least) one has to scan each double page 3 times to get all the infos done. then you have to mount it back to one pic again and divide it in single pages. and it will look crappy even though. Cuts in bikes and such. i started it twice first shot took me to page 4 second one ( because my HD broke before) to page 3 ...
this includes the german and the uk version however, i dont know whetehr the us catalogue is any different.

@ultracoach
what do you want to know ? we're talking 20 years of bikes here at least- and gt changed a lot. writing down all the changes will take serious time and in teh end people will put skarebs in their 1992 zaskar anyhow :)roll: sorry, no offence... ).

ie the avalanche.
not available in 85/86
introduced as highest end bike in 87 made by toyo,
dto in 88 but made in taiwan.
place 2 steel hardtail in 89- 92 since (ps)(c)yclone becomes topoftheline steel frame.
93 made in the us, still place 2.
94 ava becomes alloy
-08 different models, types, appearances. ie: le, fs, al, the 1.0,2.0 crap and such...however some years the frames were identical (latter ones) sometimes you had differences like on the zaskar frames with cncD details etc.

Kint.....small correction the Avalanche was introduced in aluminum in 1993....Avalanche AL it was called. in 1993 there was also a Team Avalanche in steel.

Thanx for the input guys. Guess what i really want to know, where in the scheme of things does a 1991 Tempest sit? Is it as good as a zaskar? Not quite?? Frame is great, really strong...made from 7005....is a zaskar 6061? Also need to know correct spec for the year.....did Tempest's have xt ..?
Got the frame from scant few days ago....siezed bottom bracket, kanckered crank threads...but all good now, frame stripped down, decals off, and all being polished up.....pics soonish.
Merry xmas to everyone! :D

Ultra,
The Zaskar was the first and only aluminum GT produced in 1991. Yes Zaskar's, except one year have always been 6061. No a Tempest is not as good as a Zaskar, Avalanche or Pantera for that matter. Spec wise the Tempest was an aluminum framed Timberline (steel frame Shimano Alivio spec GT). XT would be a blessing for a Tempest frame. Kind of like putting a saddle on a jack ass....but I've seen people put XT on an Outpost frame and try and sell it for $600 too. The Tempest was first produced in 1995. If you go to the link below it shows in produced from 1995-1997 and never made in a polished color so chances are yours was once painted and has been stripped. Original specs are included at this link.

Wow...awesome rep[ly, thankyou.
But...what makes a great frame..?
The frame is solid, the angles are good, the welds are tidy, 7005 is decent enough, and it is seriously over engineered in places...so what puts the zaskar frame above??...apart from6061 that is....is the material spec enough to seperate them that much? Just taking the frame alone, why would it not be worth putting decent spec kit on it..??
Snobbery?............mmmmmm?
