without wishing to sound like a smart arse if its 7 speed it wll have 6 clicks...

If your shifters have the ESP, then it will need ESP rear mech to make it work, have you change them or it's one you always use and suddenly came up with a problem?

Certainly sounds like there is an ESP / Shimano thang going on there. :?

I dont think ESP existed at the time of STR600 .

Gripshift problem

It sounds like you do indeed have a Sram-only shifter.These work on a1:1 cable ratio, and is not compatible with anything other than a Sram rear mech.A new mech or shifter i am afraid.

was getting to the conclusion its 1:1

yes it does the 7 speeds (6 clicks ) with no mech

one other thing i notice when i put it in lowest click there is a lot of slack in the cable

What make is the gripshift? does have the ESP marking on them or the package box?
