Yesterday was a nice day in the "grim North" so it would have been rude not to get a ride in.
Just up through Ballaugh plantation, round some very boggy tracks in Tholt-y-Will and then a descent into "The Port" and home.

Quick question if I may.....

I've bought a 94 outpost trail to use as a donor bike for my 1990 Timberline SS project only to find that i has a horrible freewheel rather than freehub.

Can I use this wheel for SS without leaving the cassette on or spending a fortune?

If you use a BMX freewheel you will probably find it sits too close to the centreline for a good chain line. However if you are prepared to re-dish the wheel it is doable. Ideally you realign it by swapping all the spacers from left to right then rebuild the wheel with the left spokes on the right. I've done this on a Hope screw-on hub and it has now done 6 years or so.

Hi all
Out of the blue i have ended up with a 2000 Kona Kaboom frame , i have never thought about the SS thing at all but having this has made me curious
I know nothing about SS but i guess my main question is do i need a rear wheel with a " nutted " axle ? or can i use a spare qr wheel that i have ? the frame has sliding track type dropouts so i wondered if there was some kind of converter / chain tensioner like a bmx has to pull the wheel back or would a qr not hold it tight enough ?

You can use a qr wheel no problem. Best to use a Shimano qr rather than a boutique one though. You could probably get away without a chain-tug but they do make life easier for adjustment. There are loads of ss threads about for advice if you search, or go to sheldons site as there is lots of info there. Also loads of ss and fixie shops that will sell any stuff you might need. Charlie the bikemonger, velosolo, hubjub and brick lane bikes are all ones I have used.
But the main bit of advice is go for it. SS is awesome fun.
