Got the "final" part - Sugino 75 road group

Ann87

Dirt Disciple
After years of semi-idle searching, I just today received the "final" piece of this rare Sugino 75 Road group set.

I say "final" in quotation marks because arguably a Tyrano wheel or set of wheels would make it even more complete, but those cost as much or more than the whole rest of the group combined :/
Also there are Sugino marked headsets around, but I don't know if they're really considered part of the 75 group.

Anyway, the seat post was the last piece of the puzzle for me. Weirdly, it was listed as a Selcof by the seller in Romania. While it does lack the sticker, and could have been sold under a different name, it is undeniably the same carbon-wrapped, Sugino product.

Thought I would drop some pictures here since there aren't very many on the Internet of everything all together. And maybe it would inspire someone else to keep looking for that final piece!

Most of this group would have been available factory specced on one of the high-end Lotus bicycles, but not much else. You mostly see them on Zunow Z-1s now.

Cheers!

Very very nice and congrats on finishing the gruppo! What bike are you planning to put it on? I’ve also got the same group set but had a couple of questions. What BB/length are you using? Will you be running it 7 speed? If you ever have a CHC chainring for sale or hear of one then please let me know. Looking forward to seeing it all mounted and cheers. Tom

Funny enough I don't have any solid plans for it. It was more of an instance of setting out to collect the parts on the basis of rarity. If I had a titanium Fuji/Sumitomo or Panasonic, I'd mount it on that. But seeing as I don't, I'll probably just try to trade it.

I think the spindle that came with my group is just the standard 108mm [109], but I can double check. I thought I remembered reading that these cranks were built around the short spindle length, but I could be wrong. If I was mounting I'd probably just swap the BB for old iso campagnolo if I needed more space. And probably run it 6 speed, on the less is more philosophy.

Is yours mounted? Or do you have plans to do so?

I completely understand. I’ve also got a few GS that I’ve collected because of how rare they are and I enjoyed the search. Yours is in great condition and I’m sure you’d never have a problem swapping/selling it out as parts are becoming harder to come by. You’re absolutely right re the seatpost. It’s a carbon wrapped Selcof that just had a gold Sugino sticker on it.
Thanks for the info, a measure would be really appreciated if you get time. There’s so little info on them online that anything would help. I think I’ll go for a Sug Mighty BB to keep it all by the same brand. Also wondering if a Sug 75 NJS BB would work as it’s 109mm. Mines going on a 3Rensho roadie in blue which matches my 3Rensho track frame for which I’ve got a complete Campagnolo Record NJS/Cinelli NKS groupset. Still to decide on the hubs/bars etc which will go on the roadie though. I think you should find a nice frame to put it on, it’s too nice to let go ;) thanks again. T

Just checked and the BB that came with my group is just the standard, symmetric 109 njs that is still widely available. Marked ms and mw, which someone in a different forum thought meant that it was intended for use with both track and road double cranks.

It looks like my spindle has been used so I'm guessing it was indeed paired up with my crank in its former life, but of course I can't be sure. Almost makes me want to mount it to something just to check.
