yes a RH will sort of work, they have a "silent click" so you can push it past 1st gear position but i always felt it didn't work very well, as if the spacing was off, but i think people put up with it, you could always use the friction option though.

you can use a Suntour xc pro thumbshifter though, they were available in 8 speed and worked ok with shimano
 
I did this iirc using it as an 8sp and managed to get it set up pretty sweetly, didn't skip in any gears. I was using an 8sp xt cassette and rear mech (m739 if memory serves). I must admit I'd heard it may not be optimal shifting wise, but that seemed to be unfounded from this experience.

As above though, xc pro had an 8sp version which works in Shimano cassettes. I used an xc pro mech though, not sure if it will work with Shimano mechs, and by that I mean I haven't a clue rather then being a doubter.
