GIOS Torino - Advice wanted :)

Hi All.

Just joined as I'm after some advice. I've just been given a GIOS Torino Professional and don't know where to start with it. It's in a bad way (rusty parts on frame) but from what I've read they're worth a few bob.

Didn't if it's worth restoring or try & sell as it is and what it might be worth ??

I've attached some pics & would really appreciate any advice on what my best move would be

Hard to say from photos but with that much rust visible through the frame, it's probably toast.

You won't get much for it in its current condition - would need a lot of money spent on it for it to be of use to anyone.

Ah, but is it just surface rust, discolouring? Or is it structural? Like dbmtb says it might be toast if it's all the way through, but from the photos it might just need a clean up?

Strip it completely and have a thorough look inside and out.

Or, if you can't be arsed, I'll give you a tenner for it. The season of goodwill is almost upon us and I'm feeling generous.

The rust on the top tube might be superficial if it's been used as a turbo-bike. I'd look under the BB shell and the chainstays as there's where bikes most commonly rust-out. At least the seatpost isn't stuck! The nut and bolt through the seat collar needs investigating too. A frame is good nick in worth £300 plus, the problem is that rectifying the faults and a respray may cost about £300....so presently it's not worth much.

Most of the yellowing is only staining and would wipe off or would come off with some cutting paste. Where I think it is knackered is on the bottom of the top tube. I'd say water has got in the cable holes & sat in the top tube as there's a fair bit of rust on the bottom.

Is it possible to get stickers for this bike as if so I'll strip it & see just how bad the damage is. I could then get it painted fairly cheaply & get a set of original stickers on it.

Do these bike still sell for good money if they've been repainted (as long as it a decent job & in the orginal colours with stckers) ??

They are sought after bikes, no doubt there. Google will explain more than I possibly can. First step is to check the condition of the frame, that will decide everything else.

If you're going to restore it try to avoid a "fairly cheap" paint job (unless you're referring to a professional job done by a mate for a small fee). You can buy replacement decals but not for all brands so check in advance. Alternately, if you really want to sell it on, just check it over and clean it up but leave the decals on and sell it in original condition for someone else to restore.

Gios are very popular in the Far East - I sold a really scruffy Compact Pro for good money to Taiwan a few years ago. As the components aren't contemporary with the frame, prospective buyers aren't going to be interested in mid-range 1990s parts. It is still possible to replace a frame tube if severely corroded, but unless you're going to go for the full respray, I'd leave it be.
