The 1x looks cleaner, you may find the 11-36 cassette to restrictive depending on the riding you do. Sunrace do some wider range cassettes in 10 speed.

How do you find the flat bars after having risers on? I tried flat bars after years of risers and hated them.

I agree on that and I've updated my Kona Dawg in a similar way. On the 1x gear ratio, Ztto sell 10s 11-42 cassettes (less than £20 on ebay) that an SLX m675 works fine with (one on my lads bike) so your XT 786 should also work too as both are rated at 36T (but that's probably across a 2x trans). That will give you a far better range on the 1x trans if you need it.

On my local rides I think I will be ok with 34x36 as was managing everything on the middle 32 of the triple and 32 on the back (1:1) so going a little lower should be a safe bet. But good to know I have an option if i'm wrong! Thanks.

With the bars, I had a low rise Brand X bar before the flat one. the new one is the no rise equivalent so has the same sweep. I have 1 10mm spacer over the stem to play with as well if it too nose down. I cut the riser down to 700mm which I haven't done on this one yet. I might put the WTB dual compound grip back on instead of the cheap lock-on(ish) ones. They were grippier I think.


The XT mech as it came...I am touching up the black, fitting a cross head b-screw instead of the extra long one ak one and some XT jockey wheels salvaged from a damaged mech.

That’s good to know that the 10s rear mechs rated for 36t work with a 42t cassette. What was the quality of the eBay cassette like?
I just found that flat bars felt weird to me after years of risers.
