Giant build for a big bloke (6 ft 5in).

Hello all.

Having acquired a 15 inch clockwork for my son at the weekend I contacted a pal who used to be a racer in the 90's for a bit of gen on what I'd just got.

As the conversation progressed he volunteered that he could give me enough parts to start a build for myself.

Giant Terrago frame (new old stock) in brushed steel which looks to be sufficiently enormous!
Manitou SX R Forks
Pair of Bontrager red anodised wheels (they are built with hubs but I don't know what these are yet) Radial spoked front, HD spokes in rear.
He's probably going to be able to find me a headstock and a seat post too.

I'm going to collect this little haul on Friday so will post pictures once they are home.

Although this gives me the basics I'm going to need a load of parts to complete this.

I'm set on vee brakes but the rest of the spec is open, although at my level of fitness I'd guess the more gears it has the better my chances of actually getting from A to B!

What I'm looking for are nice quality parts that are not good enough to grace a concours rebuild (rubbed, chipped etc) but are still serviceable.

I'm a (tries to be modest here) competent home engineer so strip/clean/re-assemble isn't an issue and I've access to a lathe so can make spacers and the odd little part.

I'll admit that I know little about the prices of such items so I'll have to trust you chaps, but from what I'm reading here on the forum I'm pretty sure that you'll be honest and kind.

So, what's sitting in the shed that I need and you don't want?

I leave myself in your capable hands.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Jerry.

Probably better posting this in the wanted section mate, you'll be offered everything you could possibly need!

I'd be looking for either Shimano LX or STX parts for the build. Both come in at a good price but are decent quality and will do the job.

Following your advice I have copied and pasted my first post into the wanted section.

I'll continue this as a build thread...

Welcome to RB Jerry
Prepare to spend loads of time and money on here :)
I'm sure you'll find what you need on here?

Orange71 is a tall gentleman. He may offer some good advice for those with a long inside leg.

You might want to look into getting a pair of 180mm cranks. I am a little over 6' and I use 180's-more leverage for the hills. If your legs are long enough to accommodate them, and at your height I assume they are, then they will be easy enough to spin.

Poor quality pix but here are the frame and forks.

Should I be slightly nervous about the angle of that head though?
