I found this bike for sale and got it for next to nothing. Pulled it apart a good clean and lube a few new bits. I have been riding some single track with it for a few months and loving it.
I have been out of mountain biking for a long time and really enjoying it again.
You don’t see many Giants here so posting some photos.

Quality bit of late 90s kit :) Giant have a good deal more race heritage than what others on here would deem "cool" brands.

Hey, I like this picture and your bike. I note that you are in Australia as well.

Afater having two MTB's stolen this year, I had the good fortune to come across a Giant ATX890 on a Council verge collection and it is in very good condition. Perished tyres, a rocking headset and stuck front brake.

I asked the owner if it was on the verge by accident and he said I could take it.

I hope to restore the bike to original condition.

Will post some pics in due course.

Beautiful! I remember unboxing those when they arrived at the shop, about what, 1996/7/8? Nice little bikes to test ride, but never got to try one on the trails.

Giants always had a nice, clean look to them BITD.

+1

even today I think it still looks a well balanced / clean design,

sounds kinda dumb but it just looks fast

I recently bought a Giant Talon 2014 27.5. Its a good bike, but the steel framed Giant ATX890 is lighter.

I am wondering whether we need all the modern stuff like disc brakes which add weight.

The Giant ATX890 does look fast and I am sure that it will perform as well as my Talon.

Can't wait until I get it back from being fully serviced at the LBS.

Of course we don't need all the heavy, bombproof engineless dirtbike gear they sell as mountainbikes today. A mountain bike should be light weight, simple, short travel (if any), a touch fragile even.... Mike Ferrentino was right!

Re:Giant ATX890 (199:cool:

This is my pride and joy. My own Giant ATX890 which as posted previously I found on a verge rubbish collection. It has perished tyres, seat and sticky brakes but otherwise had rarely been used.

I have replaced these parts and have been out doing some singletrack. The bike is very light and rides extremely well. Here are some pictures from Margaret River in Western Australia.

My plan is to polish it up and powdercoat the frame and get some skinwall tyres.
