I briefly used Dura ace 7700 barend shifters on the downtube bosses of my bike until I could find some proper 7700 downtube shifters. They slid on fine and worked fine but they are very short and looked strange, so yes they will work if you don't mind the look.

The Campag nine speed bar-end levers should fit on with no problem. They are indeed the same levers as the downtube ones.

thanks. after measuring the parts I have, the boss is slightly larger than 9mm so I guess it's the chrome that's the problem. I think I'll go with the DA 7700 levers, as they only have a close fit on the flats of the boss, not on the cylindrical part like the campag levers do.
