Front mech and shifter compatibility

I'm sure this info is somewhere here, but I can't find it anywhere... Can anyone tell me if an 8 speed XT front mech will shift an 8 speed triple chainset set up as a double, with middle and small rings only, when using a 10 speed front shifter?

I'm sure someone will know, probably LGF who is the master of the universe of mech and shifter compatibility!

I think road and MTB are compatible up to 9 speed. There's loads of info on rear mechs and shifters, but little or none on the front, I think there were changes, but there's nothing on actual cable pulled per shift, etc

Very unlikely to work I'm afraid, you could try running a slack cable or try clamping the cable in different positions

Easy, just set the adjuster screws so it stops at the middle ring or or or use one of those SLX shifters with switch from 3 rings to a double

I am using an SLX M670 shifter with a 560 LX mech and it shifts with no issues but it is the low swing type. Traditional style mechs - I dont know

The M735 conventional front mech worked with some Tiagra 8spd shifters without too much hassle

The front mechs at the bottom should work all the way through to the last of the 10spd Deore/ LX/ SLX/ XT/ Zee etc etc 2/ 3spd shifters

This is one of those 2/3spd SLX M670 shifters running a very old M560 LX front mech (I did 36 miles with this set up yesterday)

Liking what you have done with that Zaskar. It's similar to what I have put together with an early 90's Raleigh mtb frame, although I've put road tyres on to use it as a wet weather road bike. The front mech is driving me insane, I can get it to work fine and then approx three rides later it seems to have gone out of adjustment and either won't shift to the outer or won't drop down onto the inner. The m560 mech is bottom pull conventional and the crank is a stronglight impact triple 28/38/48, so should be ok with the mech.

Hmmm mixing road and MTB front mechs is an arse. You may be better off using a road mech instead
