It looks pretty much 'as new'..

Can't see any other markings on it, if I were to try to match it to a rear one (to put on the Voodoo) do I just look for STX RC rear blah blah blah??
7 or 8-speed would be ok I suppose..

they were on cheap bikes right the way through to mid range so there are millions of them.

Try and get ones that dont work, the ratchet gets gummed up and is piss easy to get working again.

On cheap bikes. . .

What's the quality/durability like?

Don't even know where I got it, would have been in the 90's sometime I should think though...

like any other bit of kit - mostly fit and forget but can suffer from lack of maintenance.

Personally I found them better to use than the original XT Rapidfire Plus but not as 'clicky' as LX

I have a vague memory of seeing a STX-RC 8spd shifter in the bottom of my toolbox last time I ventured into the dark and dingey place. Was one with the shifting window too. I will investigate when I get a chance.

What I neglected to remember was that I need to put V-brakes on this bike..

Jeeeeeezus I'm such a numpty..... been a tough coupla days though, that's my excuse. :?

Brand new 7 speed STX shifters are still widely available from places like the Wooly Hat Shop for about £20 a pair.

They are good reliable shifters though. Along with 7 speed, I also have some 8 speed ones which are tough as old boots and have out-lasted two sets of fragile XT M739/740 shifters.

The Shimano M number on the one you've got will probably be on the underside of the polished clamp. Could be anything from MC-30 to MC-40.
