So this happened today whilest adjusting my handlebar height by removing spacers.. is it dangerous to ride them like this? I can't feel any play in the forks.. all feels fine....

So is it dangerous, or is everything fine with the stem holding the forks in place?

well that cap isnt load bearing as such, its to fine tune the headset bearing tension my wifes dawes has no top cap and seems fine other than from a waterproof point of view

The stem is what holds the forks in place on any other bike. The top caps are only to tension the headset bearing, which is why they are so often plastic.

Just tap the broken bit in the steerer down a little way and you're ready for the new one

I use a kids cricket stump and a mallet for this purpose. Perfect fit.

Or my method is find a screwdriver the right size, put the shaft of the screwdriver in the hole and tap away!
