Fork Removal - P2's on a Kona Cinder Cone

Here are a couple of pics of the forks - surprised they have got this scabby. I know the bike is 18 years old but the paint on the frame is very good, almost like its a tougher paint, or perhaps just better preparation / primers etc?

Yeah, as you say, more time is probably spent on the frame
finish than the forks, they look scabby but would have lasted
another ten years at least, are you getting them painted or
powdercoated ?, powdercoaters usually blast the paint and rust
off, a painter may strip the paint off then treat the remaining
surface rust with chemicals or rust treatment such as Hammerite
Kurust, powder coat is a very tough finish but paint is fine too if
done properly.

Post pics when you get them done though ;)

As it regularly says in the Haynes car manuals assembly is
the reverse procedure of the strip down, only thing to watch is adjusting the headset,
very easy for a novice to overtighten this so go easy, assesment is
done (when the bike is back together) by applying the front brake and rocking the bike back and forth
with your free hand round the top of the headset, if movement can
be felt tighten the headset slightly untill no movement is felt but the
forks/bars can turn freely, may need to repeat this procedure after
the first ride.

Powder coated. Apparently they blast them off, prime and then powder coat - seems like the most robust option for forks.

Will do re the 'after' pics. I'll check headset as you suggest.

Cheers

As this is a retro site, I would advise taking the best pics you possibly can of those 1991/2 Project 2 decals before you blast them into oblivion, just in case Gil_M doesn't have an image on file.

Anthony - good point... I received the correct '91 decals from Gil yesterday, and very nice they are too. Got the ful set including frame etc as I plan to get that done next year, though thinking of getting that done in white, hence Gil suggested changing the white parts of the decals to a silver/grey so they'll work on a white frame should I go that way, alternatively they'll still be fine if I stay with blac.
