Fork identification

Hi Everyone.

I'm not sure if these would be after '98 or not but think it's likely they would not be older.

I'm new here and hoping someone can help identify some forks that came on a bike I bought for my son this summer. They have been very poorly painted at some point with Marzocchi bomber decals applied, but I'm thinking they look like older Rockshox. Can anyone help tell what these are or where i could find out. There is a serial stamped on the crown but I would have no clue if this is original to the lowers. The number reads 803J913448 (I think) Could the J denote a Judy fork ?

The lad is keen to get them functioning properly (one leg currently has a leaky seal), strip and spray them, and apply the right decals. I'm just wondering if this would be worth his/my time or not.

They look like Judy to me. Black uppers would suggest hydracoil era. Look like spring not air versions based on top cap.

probably a T2 with the black stanchions, probably not worth fixing as the stanchion looks a bit worn.
Pull them apart and have a look.

Cheers guys, thought they looked like Judys from looking at internet pictures. If they would be a pain to renovate I'll tell the lad to save up for a cheap pair to replace them. Yes the stanchions do look a bit bit scratched with some rust bubbling higher up. It'd be a learning experience anyway as I've never serviced any forks myself but appreciate that getting a shop to do it would be daft money for a basic old fork.

It would indeed be a very useful learning experience. Don't expect them to be done right first time, learning to paint well takes several goes but its only the cost of some paint tins and decals.

Yes the painting would be new to me, but I'd be most worried about actually pulling the forks apart and replacing oil and seals etc. I'm pretty handy and practical but when you've never done a particular task before you can easily fark things up.
