Yeah, I thought gross Yank humor might have been a bit much. After reflecting I deleted the other frame crack. Perhaps it wasn’t so bad, she had on a swim suit, sorta. I was probably tanked up myself when I posted it.

There were a couple of derailleurs from that period; Frenchman Jean Loubeyre patented his ‘Polyceler’ in 1895, and in Britain there was the ‘Gradient’ and ‘New Protean’ around 1897-99.

Dah crank is better, but maybe not all better. I’ll have to assemble da Vicky to see if bout pedals is da same distance avay from dem chain stays, eh. Dis be yooper dialect. Good example when I was in uncle Normie’s basement. He called down “trow me up da stairs dat pail what tells lard, if it ain’t dere, don’t do it. I probly got nails in dat junk drawer in da cook room”.

Measuring the proper crank that’s not bent. Get a rough idea of where the bent Vickey crank should be.
The Vicky crank didn’t fit the modern bb very well, modern ball bearings in this bottom bracket are too small so the Vicky races were too small. I tightened it up so the Vicky crank wouldn’t turn. Took out all slack but it’s possible to crush the retainers and make the crank loose.
Here is the yooper crank straightening jig. The hose clamp broke and flew into orbit. I then used a U bolt and that held.
I may have bent some stuff I didn’t want bent. I’ll have to assemble the Vicky to see if the spindle or chainring is bent. It took enormous force to bend the crank arm. I think it worked though.

And then there are patents and patents, some international, some not.....that's another rabbit warren.

One thing I am getting from this too, is.........there is a certain pride and Euro bike snobbery.......your example shows some incredible advances that makes this ill placed and without warrant. I have not seen anything like this trawling the French vintage forums - too summerise refined gas pipes and whacky ideas!

Not to forget in a small relative time frame after, Ford appeared around the corner.

I really think your bike demonstrates something of an engineering excellence that the USA had built up, not necessarily a financial venture.

How about 1890s belt drive, geared transmission or electric bicycle.

There is a vintage car show in St. Ignace, Michigan this weekend. I leave tomorrow morning and I get to drive either my buddies Porsche Carrera or his hopped up 1970 Mercury Cougar. There is a thunderstorm going on today so nothing will be done on the Vicky until next week. We take a ferry, rent bicycles and ride around nearby Mackinaw Island. It’s an interesting place as no motor vehicles have ever been allowed there. Bicycles and draft bourses everywhere. Lots of old bicycles to look at. The town on the island is old by USA standards, 16 - 1700s. The weather is predicted to be good but it’s chilly 10 miles out in Lake Huron.
