Fixing a Victorian

This is an amazing thread. I have so much respect for the Victorian man, in particular the western man with his ingenuity and limitless drive to push boundaries. I firmly believe that our civilization peaked during this period, and studies show this to be true.

There is one study in particular that involved inputting every single parliamentary speech made since records began, many centuries worth and tens of thousands of speeches. By using clever software to determine the complexity of language used (which correlates directly with General Intelligence) they found that IQ's peaked during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, levelled off somewhat into the early 20th century and have since fallen off a cliff! (Two world wars robbing us of much of our finest breeding stock, modern medicine and abundant food lifting us out of Darwinian conditions, contraceptives enabling the wisest among us to avoid children we can't afford and the welfare state encouraging those who otherwise would never have made it out of childhood, let alone achieve breeding age, to breed like rabbits on the tax payers coin - to name but four known accelerants).

Suffice it to say Diane Abbott is no Disraeli. In fact 16th century man was significantly smarter than early 21st century man I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear.

Anyway, this thread shows exactly that.

I just spat coffee.....
Dianne Abbott is no Disraeli 😂

So I finished googling about 3 am last night..
I was drunk,I am hungover this morning...

It seems from the random reading I did last night that this tubing is a big bucks heavy industry product aimed fair and square at the cycle industry!
The sales blurb stating completely smooth inside and out I think is the key selling point....ease of painting finish....no internal seam...I'd imagine to any frame builder these are attractive qualities for obvious reasons! It is also probably more workable than a more traditional seamed tube and probably more compliant in ride quality and obviously lighter!
I think all the tubing forks blades aswell were supplied by this manufacturer. My original hunch was right I reckon.....someone very cunning who knew their machinery and skill sets probably adapted a manufacturing process to make this.
I'm imagining a production line that's actually quite automated ! Yes skilled operatives but also purpose built and or modified machinery ...a real system!
I think further info might be obtainable from patent searches maybe? Or research into the Hamilton tube co history? I'm not great at all that stuff and wouldn't know where to begin....but I do want to know more!
I'd hazard a guess that this kind of tube would of also disappeared fairly quickly from this point in history due to the advances in welding techniques and the forward marching of electrickery!
So folks go forth and research...💪
Let's see if more can be dug up...
We need to know more about the dimpled process....this is really important!
I found diddly squat reference to that.
Nabeaquam your bike is super spesh and deserves the attention!

Never in my mind has a tube been so funky!

Hamilton tube co. Ohio
Think I just seen reference to 1888 the tubing was available
wow, better stuff followed shortly.
Where you found the advert for the tubes from "The Wheel and cycling trade review" is a gold mine.

There are several on-line publications of "The Wheel and cycling trade review" - and they are all mental 750 - 1100 pages long.

My 13 year old computer is struggling and about to go into melt down......

I’m really impressed about how people are following my struggles, helping with research and suggestions. A group project. The Smithsonian in Washington DC has all The Wheel and Cycling Trade Reviews on line, from 1888. Really interesting advertising by long gone companies. There is no index to find things but really a fascinating read. It even lists new patents. Is this where you found this info?

Many hands make light work!
I'm pretty useless at internet trickery much rather help out bending things back into shape in your yard 😂 I have a feeling woz is going to be AWOL for a while reading through thousands of pages of Victorian cycle awesomeness!

I‘m cleaning the bb and headset. The bottom cup on the headset is brindled, but not as bad as the Gloria I rebuilt. I’m a little disappointed but the roads were so rough then I’m not surprised. I’ll have to use it. At least it’s not chipped off like the pedal races. E94B9586-E06F-4486-AE04-C2AE7F3FB5EA.jpeg
