Retro Newbie
I was a avid rider when I was a teenager. I had a few bikes in my twenties, and know in my trirties I want to revisit my youth. I started looking to buy a new 29er a couple months go. I was researching new bikes and trying to figure what I wanted.I have been watching craigslist waiting for a deal. well last night I found a 1992 rockhopper comp for 40 bucks. I was looking at the pics and minus the colors, this was the same as my first"high end" bike when I was 12. my dad had bought me a blue 92 rockhopper for chistmas in 92. I started surfing websites when I came across retrobike. I went and bought this bike yesterday, and I am stoked to do this build. it;s 100% stock and all original. deore lx"silver" components, f/r deraileurs, canti's,cranks, deore dx radip fire shifters, sealed bb,lx hubs. Is a full ridied with a 1" threaded headset. I really want a rs mag or quad 21,but they seem to be hard to find. I have found some rst/sr suntour forks but does anyone know where I can find to pediod correct parts. I have exhausted ebay with know avail.

heres a bad pic,but its the idea ..awesome satin greay and pink

Welcome to the forum and to the wonderful, and wallet emptying world of retro bikes.

The classified and wanted threads on the forum could find you what you need, on either side of 'the pond', and the search function is your friend. Don't worry if an advert is a couple of months old, it's always worth dropping a PM to the seller, just in case.

Plenty of photo's of the build up please, we like photos

Good luck with your build.

doing a little cleaning and brain storming.

I ordered a
150mm kore stem
1" quill to 1 1/8" threadless adapter
26.2 xlc dual binding seatpost
and just to get me going a rst 700a fork. going to paint it yellowe and slap some rock shox stickers on it..lol

also decided on 1x7 drivtrain
ordered a chain as well

Keep the original stuff, as sometimes it's nice to go back to the old setup.

I am currently favouring a rigid forks. That said, I just rebuild the XC700 forks on my Zaskar and boy do you know they're working on rocky downhills.

The main thing for me is enjoyment, both tinkering with and riding the bike.

Keep the pictures coming.

Did I mention that we like pictures ;)

You're going to need a chainguide unless you like stopping ever 50' to put your chain back on.

Enjoy your youth! (again)

I have run 1x7 on one of my bikes for over a year now including off road and haven't dropped the chain once. I have the chain maybe a link or two shorter than I usually would and no problems.

There were some quadra 21r's on US ebay this week, they're not hard to come by but watch out, the elastomers will almost certainly have decomposed to mush and will need to be replaced.

there is a company suspensionforkparts.net where I got some replacement elastomers, I chose medium not hard compound and they were WAAAY too soft and bottomed on the smallest bump.

I've just bagged a set of Judys with springs instead of elastomers, got them for £45.00 there are a couple of sets of suspension forks come up on here every week so just keep your eyes on the classifieds.

I kept my bike from 1994 never sold it and thanks to this site I'm doing it back up, fitting all the bits that I could never afford back then. I'm much happier with this than getting a new bike so I know where you're coming from.

Please post pics as you go

All the best......... Rick

the problem is finding a fork with a threaded or ever threadless in a 1" headtube. I will keep my eyes open. I picked up a junker suntour m3000 from nycbikes.com for 19+5 to ship. so that will get me going until I find what I want.
