Re:

Well i pulled out all the stops in order to get the bike ready for the Sheffield sky ride Sunday 10th Aug, and i made it. There are one or two areas i need to go back too, for instance i did nothing with the spokes other than a quick clean and a check over, the pedals are still not done, must confess to fitting my clippless ones, im just so used to ridding clipped in now.

Also got my LBS to fit a new free wheel to compliment the new chain, I cheated a bit and got one with a 28 tooth sprocket. I live in Sheffield and its all hills here so if i want to use it (and i do) i need the lower gear.

We did the sky ride, in the pouring rain i might add along with hundreds of other nutcases, it was great too, not hard it was only 5 miles but fun and a bit odd riding familliar roads with the route sometimes on the wrong side of the carriageway and NO CARS! the route also went inside Sheffield Uniteds Stadium and around the perimeter of the track ( which was novel). All in all a good time was had and the bike was faultless apart from the poor braking in the wet.

I had one or two people looking at the bike without comment, but when we parked up in the winter gardens for a mid ride coffee a guy stopped and said the bike was " peachy and looks very nice" He had once owned a Clubman.

Thanks Yardbent, I hope so too.

The beeswax arrived today i will head to the garage to give it a try shortly. Your generosity in sending it at your cost has has astounded me, thank you so much. Gary.

Re:

I agree spokesmann, you can see why the original owner fell for the bike in the first place it is an eye catching colour scheme. I guess i was the same, i hadnt set out to buy a Carlton it could have been any marque to be fair, but the paint work caught my eye along with the tiny price tag of course. ;) i am a yorkshire man after all!

Total cost including purchase price? about £60 and plenty of elbow grease.

Nicely done, preserving the originality of the bike and resisting temptation to change parts.

Re:

Thanks for the kind words. The only issue on the Sky ride was the wet weather braking, It was very poor, a combination of steel rims, water and new pads i guess. If it hadn't been for the event i would not have ridden in the rain anyway but its always possible to get caught out by the weather so is there a way to improve performance without changing to alloy rims?
