Totally pointless - take a decent wheel, and add a cover that adds nothing to the wheel, other than weight.

I want one. Nice work. :)

Then you hit me with the sucker punch

Re:

wow man i remember seeing these for the first time in the 90s and thinking how the hell do these work ! Great job man keep it up!

Re:

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys.

It wasn't the easiest build, making it up as I went along but it turned out pretty much as I imagined.

The weaving of the spokes was pretty tricky but with a little practice, I'll get there.
The Discdrive Pro without the mesh looks to be the easiest weave pattern but the transparent side of that could pose some problems (seeing the donor wheels spokes through the sheet.)

A 29er version sounds interesting but I'll need to get the 26 inch version perfected first.

The wheel chair version could be pretty cool and I was looking at possibly using wheelchair spoke covers as the base for the wheel. Unfortunately they were even more expensive than the ABS plastic sheet.

Another option could be Sulky wheel covers (horse trotting carts) but I don't have any connections in the trotting industry.

I pretty sure I could get the weight way down compared to the my first version as I used pretty thick plastic as the base. Once the mesh is adhered to the base it seems to strengthen the under lying plastic.

Sorry for all the techno babble.

Re:

Anyway you could just laminate both sides of the mesh, which is pretty much what the real thing is like. The mesh being there to protect the spokes (so should on the outer side of the kevlar?)
The thinner plastic would be much lighter as you say.

Is it Aluminium mesh?

Re:

I'm using fibreglass tape which doesn't weigh much at all for the mesh at this stage. It's really flexible as well. I spray the tape layer using leather paint.

I was thinking of using clear polycarbonate sheet for the transparent version then I would assemble the rivets, cord, etc. directly on top of that.

It's style over function. Adding unneccesary weight, and noise. And if that really mattered, we wouldn't all be riding old bike would we?

It looks good, VERY good. it's been done well, and brought a smile to my face. :D :D We all rode with wheel covers BITD anyways, right?

Re:

I certainly did. I made a cover from an old Real Estate agent sign and fitted it to my 1990 GT Tequesta.

It was attached with the thin wire that used to wrap around bags of bread.

I thought I was the best thing since sliced bread.....HAAA!!!
