Fall from grace

That comment wasn't aimed at yourself or anyone in particular. It's also way off topic. My point was more that often the same people who bemoan the demise of their LBS rarely use it, favouring instead the cheaper online retailers....
I know fella (on all counts) but, since it was thrown out there (and the ending of the LBS has been mentioned in this thread), I thought I'd share an experience and viewpoint ;)

R.E. johns comments on GT's demise
basically (and there must be more to it than this ) the financial controller
and partner in GT was killed in a motorcycle accident
the financial side fell to bits after this and by the time anyone noticed
it was too late

the thing with mtb's is that it was an enthusiast generated scene and the
major players in the earl days were entusiasts ,blokes in sheds
like any "next big thing" the corporate world moves in and cashes in
i wonder how many of the current bike manufacturers would be alive
if the bicycle hadn't re-invented it's self ?

I've read 2 recent reviews of Manitou Minutes (26"+29") and both were favourable. I think there was a bad spell a few years back but Rock Shox were the same too.

I remember them having a re-launch a few years back and have also heard decent reviews. Had a set of 2005 Splice's and they were pretty good. My point though is that bitd they were one of the default choices but now I suspect people would only get a pair if they came on a new bike or were available at a huge discount.

Has anyone mentioned Pace yet?? - read through the thread and didn't seem them mentioned.

They made some great frames and forks once upon a time, but what do they make now??

Don't think Pace quite come in to the 'fall from grace' group as they still knock out high end frames and many people would still buy from them on brand image alone.

Agree that they are not as interesting any more. It was a real shame when they sold out the forks to DT. :(

Surprised no ones picked up on Ringle, from the best of the best to a really poor badge exercise. Do seem to have picked up and found a market but still a shadow of its old self in the cutting edge stakes.

*sigh* so many companies from BITD have "fallen from grace" in many ways.... but then I guess that's whats called "progress".

Saracen springs to mind 1st, from A-list bikes to Z-list anonymous catalogue bikes... they still have a mountain (pun intended  ) to climb before their reputation gets back to what it used to be.

A lot of the UK companies too have gone downhill slightly ie Pace,USE, X-Lite, but then I guess that the whole MTB market has just grown over the years and their market share has been diminished.

I honestly think we'd struggle to find any.

Only the established company's pre late 80's/early 90's bike boom are unchanged - Royce, Dave Yates, Chas Roberts etc. All companies that benefited from the boom but remained focused on their existing customers.

I think that Orange could be one of those companies that have also thankfully avoided a "fall from grace".
They still produce very good and very relevant bikes across their range, from the consistently praised and now ubiquitous Five, to the classic P7 and Prestige inspired R8.

Surely Tioga have to be added to the list of 'where are they now?' though...

Bang on Paul. I was going to mention it but my well known Orange fan boy status stopped me.
