Eroica Brittania Rules

It seems a lot of money. You do get to camp for free and I suppose they want to differentiate between this ride and the millions of other sportives that are available.

Cry Havoc and let slip the Clips of War!

I do like Article 6!

Not to argumentative, but, the spirit of the event does not seem to be anything to do with 'spirit', if seems to be more concerned in the 'cash' aspect.

Again, this is running off topic, my original point was that the rules were wrong - which has been proven. I would hesitate to contribute to something which, from the outset, has incorrect rules. My dented faith would preclude me from applying.

Each to their own, I hope anyone who is riding has a great time. Initially, I thought i would have enjoyed it but now I do not think so.

Enjoy your weekend RBers,

Richard

I feel some are taking this a bit too seriously. It is all about the spirit of the event and hopefully a grand day out on old bikes. No set of rules is going to cover ever eventuality but they were brought in because people were riding the Italian version on modern mountain bikes and racers with suspension, carbon frames etc and this was starting to spoil the character and intention of the event.
Trying to get your modernish bike to fit the rules is, with respect, not what you should be spending your time doing. Go and buy an old steel racer from the 50s ,60s,70s and so long as the components are from the same era, you will comply immediately and with no trouble. There are plenty out there and not necessarily that expensive. After all, what is the name of this website ? If you are not interested in old bikes why are you here ?
As to cost, I am amazed it is so cheap ! I know I qualify for a £45 pre-booked/aged person but it includes 3 nights camping, some food, entertainment, event organisation, memorabilia etc. I can easily pay £15 a night just for my camper van so this seems good value.
Enter, Ride, Enjoy !

Hi Mr Apple,

There ia another thread about the Eroica - it mostly relates to costs etc, I think you may have been lucky with your entrance fee.

I hope you have a good three days - a full report including pics would be great.

I have the perfect bike for this but I have no pedals with clips and as I am not going to buy any to use once and pay for the privelage I am out to. I could the retro clothing.

It should be all about the bike. In fact Look had clipless pedals in 1984 surely they would be in.

I do hope some of you guys are joking. I cannot believe what I am reading here. What next ? "Oh, they recommend you carry a puncture repair outfit and I don't have one so I am out too" !

A bicycle shop owner cannot purchase a perfectly acceptable pair of Wellgo or similar clips and straps at £15 (E-bay price) which he will buy at trade price and be able to sell second hand after the event at what he paid for them ?

L'Eroica means The Heroes and refers to a time when tough men and women rode, by today's standards, relatively unsophisticated bikes on rough roads. Yes it required, and probably still does, some discomfort and perseverance. It may even require some of that to get to the start line.

If it is not your thing that's fine but please don't put down an event that some of us are really looking forward to riding and enjoying.

I don't like riding clips. Early look clipless pedals though would be period to the bike and in keeping with a top race bike which is what this Alan was back in day. According to the rules though all clipless pedal are banned even if they are pre 1987. that make no sense as they make an exception for aluminum Alan's.

I have bought cheap wellgo pedals before and they are crap and the bearings do not last long. Why would I put crap on a very high spec bike? Don't put me down.

I can't believe how negative and cynical some of you are being ...

Yes the organisers have made a number of cock ups along the way and I do wonder if they really "get it" with some of the stuff they do BUT ... they ARE putting on what is hoped to be an excellent festival of retro road biking in the UK the like of which we have never seen.

Yes they hope to make a profit ... I hope they make a profit too, because if they do then the event will continue and improve in future years.

This is likely to be the biggest retrobike event ever in the UK so that is why I am going to see all the other bikes and hopefully meet some interesting people ... if the organisers make a profit and even if there are a few hiccups along the way then fine ... do you think the Italian event developed without problems?

It's time to stop the whining and start supporting what could become a great event in years to come ...

... and if you want to ride a bike that is not 100% compliant with the "rules" just do it ...I doubt they will have people hauling riders off the route ...

For me, if I'm cynical about this it's only because the organisers themselves seem quite cynical.

I really don't think they've put as much thought into recreating the spirit of the original Eroica as they have into 'revenue maximization' or whatever they would call it.

There is the Eroica Scozia ride which looks a much better alternative that actually aims to create a real atmosphere and has an interesting concept that connects to British cycling. Why bother supporting a second-rate, overpriced event when there are better alternatives available?

I personally hope the retro ride scene does grow in the UK. Perhaps what some people have called 'moaning' or 'whining' might reflect the fact that I really enjoy and care about the good versions of these events (Retro RVV, La Savoureuse, l'Eroica etc). I think they are a good, fun, affordable way into cycling, they are more affordable and less competitive than normal sportives, and I would hate to seem them watered down into overpriced marketing stunts.

Moan moan...

Johnny
