I think the difference is that in Italy they have all kinds of restrictive rules and legislation that everybody just ignores most of the time.

I rode what was basically a 'cross bike at last year's Eroica and saw at least a couple of others doing the same, and nobody caused any problems about it.

I'm not even sure what would happen if you just turned up to EB with a bike that breaks their rules - having paid 50-70 quid it would be a bit pathetic of them to turn you away.

Think they have a lot more riders , including me, if they scrap the toe clip/straps rule..
What about clothing ?? wool shorts and tops ??? seems daft to be able to wear modern clothing and not modern shoes !!

isn't the thing with the original l'eroica that if your bike breaches the rules you dont get the finishers jersey?

The more I see off this the more it becomes painfully obvious that is about the money, and taking it from the gullible enthusiast and putting it in the organisers pocket.

Wouldn't be surprised if the organiser's pulling down a 50 grand salary.....

Best bit is how if you're not registered, you're not allowed to ride with them, on pain of expulsion.

Expulsion from what? It's a public road.

Maybe I am missing something here but isn't the idea of it to ride in the spirit of the bygone years in clothing and equipment they used? If you want to ride modern ...erm do a normal sportive? :?
