Eroica Brittania Rules

Afternoon all,

I know this event has been discussed at length previously. I came across this link to the rules for the event -

Out of interest, are these a standardised set of rules for all sportif type events?

It might me me being odd, but they seem very strict and, in places, difficult to enforce.

On a last point, I have no intention is going (due to numerous reasons) but having read the rules, I am not sure I would want to go, even if i could.

They seem very strict, but yet clearly open to interpretation on the day.

I'd considered riding it on my '89 Dave Rayner Raleigh Banana, and would comply with the clips and straps rule, but it seems if it's post '87, it can be steel, but it has to be brazed.

There's no bikes more heroic in my collection !

Can't chance all that prep and getting a DNS.

My other point of note relates to MTB's - "which did not exist before 1985". I have posted on the dark side in relation to this and apparently they did exist prior to 1985.

In preparation for this I bought some shoe cleats and clips / strap pedals for my Peugeot Perthus ('87 model). It was hideous, there's a reason everyone swapped out of clips and straps to clipless. After 25years in Looks, it's just not worth the aggro to spend a bunch of money to be told I'm not "eroic" enough. So I've bagged it.

It's daft really - you have to have 30 year old pedals, but you can use 2014 carbon shoes? Still, it's their event, their rules, and I suspect they'*ll find plenty of people prepared to part with big cash to do it.

It says the use of higher gears is permitted due to difficult terrain. Surely they mean lower gears? Was this written by an actual cyclist, a stasi official or a cute businessman with his eye on the takings?

Just chipping in. I interpret that you couldn't ride on a vintage Audax / touring bike too.

If you compare with the proper Eroica site, it seems that a lot of the rules have just been copy-pasted out of the original rule book, e.g. the point about MTBs not existing pre-1985 (tell that to Joe Breeze!).

Interestingly, while the real Eroica site promotes some other events like Eroica Japan, they don't seem to mention the British one for some reason.

I have a 1974 fast tourer with bar-end shifters and cantilever brakes - seems kind of daft, not to mention the completely erroneous MTB bit.
