Educate me on U Brakes

I have a NOS, still-in-the-box shiny, Deore XT (M-733) U-II u-brake stashed away, waiting for the right moment ...

Hi I know this is an old thread but gotta search about the U-Brake and found this thread.
I have one bike that I planned to buy which is Miyata with U-brake frame.

Do you think it is worth to buy in terms of coolness instead of performance (as stated on this thread)? is this the same with your Deore XT (M-733) 5 years ago?

Seriously? Haha what about maintenance? I seriously need to consider since I want it in long term..
Seriously cool IMHO.

Once set-up maintenance is no more than cantilevers.
They are a little more awkward to work-on because it's chainstay mounted so close to the ground. But stand your bike upside down or rotating it in a workstand is all you'll need to do to gain decent access.

Yes they do clog up more with mud than cantilevers
Some types don't open up enough to allow an decent width inflated tyre in/out which is annoying (Campagnolo ones)

Shimano XT rear U brake is a proper solid reliable stopper! 💪💪

In terms coolness, that Miyata is really up there. Are those black mavic rims too? Xt pieces, so its quality will be high. Late 80s, probably right around 88, because that's when most companies were trying u brakes underneath.
just only look on the picture, I am not sure about the rims, are they?

As above..no need to worry once set up right. Read the instructions in our library....it will help.

I've got a double u-brake swallow frame.....it stops real fine.....and the modulation is pretty good too.

Thank you for your great thought mate! @Tootyred @27motorhead
