Educate me on U Brakes

Lovely bike by the way. Nice M730 kit. Have the handlebars been replaced? Looks like they’ve got a moustache profile, but I might be wrong as they might have just got a lot of sweep?! 🤷‍♂️🧐

Pedals are M732’s. Not the beartrap M730’s.
Brake levers are Dia-Compe SS5’s, they would have been 4 finger M730’s?
Good to see original XT brake pads upfront!

And my eyes weren’t deceiving me. They were moustache profile bars…

Great observation. What is difference between M732 and M730 pedals? Can't see the difference

Yeah the moustache.. I will change it to flat once I get

Those XT pedals are the comp version of the smash your shins bear trap pedals they did in 1988 and 89,i think there coded M731 could be wrong though, the code is stamped inside the cage.
Going by the parts the bike looks to be from 1988 because straight away i see it's running the M730 Deore XT 6 speed cassette and white label M730 Deore XT rear mech (1989 they went to 7 speed with the M732 Deore XT ll groupset)
The gold label RM20's are from 1988 because my 88 Pine Mountain had them i'm sure it was 1989 Araya went with the yellow and green label for the RM20's.
The coolest bit from those Shimano Deore XT parts for me is that Biopace chainset, i've never seen a black Biopace chainringed 1988 XT chainset before it's always been silver chainrings. I've seen and owned the yellow label Deore ones but never the grey label XT one.
I love everything Deore XT so that alone would make me want to buy that bike lol

And if you do buy the bike and decide you don't want the chainset please sell it to me lol it would look perfect on my Dave Yates Vulcan 😁

the sad thing is after 1-2 days I just got respond from the seller that the bike has been sold to another buyer :((((

The rings are black label biopace...same as used on m732.

The earlier silver ones are actually a different profile...more biopace.

I think they had already started to realise after several years that it was not really a working concept.🤣

If i can find 2 i will hold them together...

I have a u brake on the back of my old GT. It’s seat stay mounted as very small frame size and i run v brake levers with this and my front deerhead cantis. Really solid, powerful braking.

I do like to see chain stay mounted ones tho. Clogging issues aside theyre a clear point in the history of mtbs that i have real nostalgia for and the seat stays/bridge look really clean.

Important reason for chainstay mount is (shouty voice) … POWER!!!!!

I had a wonderful Marin ti 1991 - raw, Litespeed - with a seat stay mounted U brake. Much power … then bowed out the stays. On my 89 Marin Palisades with chainstay mounted U brake the rigidity of that area of the frame means no stay flex and therefore more braking force. And that was evident in the field.
