Hello all

Yet another of my help needed posts from returning to these old bikes

I can't remember how to put my cantilevers together properly. They are br m650

My question is the arrangement of the springs and plastic covers. I seem to have been able to do it two ways
1 the cantis sit horizontal on the bosses with a little spring tension
2 the cantins hang upside down on the bosses with lots of spring tension

Is either of these correct?

Thanks
Chris

Someone should post a diagram for you so you can see the set-up, or perhaps you can google "M650 canti" to pull one up ... but the calipers don't need all that much tension to function properly, so it would seem that the 'up-side down/lots of tension' option isn't right ...

Re:

Thanks

I did find the instructions online but they didn't really go into detail perhaps because they would have come with the springs installed

Had a look at some images too so I will have another pop at it later

The springs are handed L / R, they need to be the right way round. One is gold and the other silver. Can't remember which is which off the top of my head ! On the grey plastic cover there is a marker that lines up with a marker on the brake when it's assembled correctly.

Also, the two sticky-outy bits on each end are different lengths. The shorter one locates into the brake and the longer one into the frame.

Re:

To get an idea of which spring goes on what side, when the brake is pulled in towards the rim, the spring should compress into a tighter, smaller circle. If the spring is actually expanding then it's on the wrong side.

The one with the 'hook' is the gold sided one ( 'left' as viewed from in front of them as fitted on the frame/fork).
The clamp side is the silver sided one (right as viewed from in front of it.)

The springs themselves when fitted in the frame/fork, wire will will first go down and then spiral outwards

Either way, like most, I forget which way they go as well when actually fitting them :-D
