For period correctness use Tri-X developed in D-76 and push it by two stops (expose at EI 1600).
Cheers, Andy. I doubt that my LCS will keep Tri-X in stock.

I've got a fidge full of the stuff. I'm more of a put a yellow filter on then push it to 800 ASA sort of fellow and develop in ID11, proper retro, mixing your own dev from powders. For bodge tastic greatness use a spash of white wine vineagar in water as a stop. I've always found Tri-X to get too contrasty at 1600 which is fine if you want soot and white wash but you do loose detail. Pushing to 800 gives you the grain but a little more shadow and highlight detail, you can always print on a hard paper if you want to loose it all, you can print contrast in but if it's not there in the neg you've got bugger all chance of printing the detail back in.

Fiber based Oriental Seagul, now there's the paper you wna to be printing on...

Kodak Tech Pan at 12 ASA in Rodinal, now there's a nostalgia trip.

I've always been a bit of a soot-and-whitewash merchant anyway, so that explains my liking for pushing Tri-X in D-76, I suppose  .
Done the vinegar stop bath bit too - the handiest source of acetic acid ;)

You can get noise reduction programs these days and as long as you don't over do it can yield some very usable images.

How often are you going to be above say ISO 800? As long as you expose correctly (histogram on back LCD) you should get hardly any noise up to 800ISO.

Cheers

Matt

I regularly have to go above 800. Often 1600 and 3200 and on 2.8 at about 1/15th if lucky. And no time for histograms and chimping at lcd screens I'm afraid.

Right, update time.

Tried the D7000 and nice,until I handled the Nikon D300s. :D :D :D :D

No way could I go back to the D7000. Even tried a Canon 7d, and teh Nikon D300s was the winner.
