Doing up my first MTB

Retro Newbie
Hi,

Newbie here. Be kind ;-)

I’m going to collect my first MTB from a shed at my dads on the weeekend. It’s a 1993/94 Marin Muirwood in grey (with some blue trim).

I used it from new until 2002 then it’s been in my dad’s shed ever since.

I figure it will need a lot of tlc to get it riding well again. I don’t have many skills when it comes to building a bike from scratch, so figured a forum like this is going to be a handy place to read up from, and hopefully get some good pointers from people. Thanks. Mark

Re:

Hi Mark, welcome to RB.

Great bunch in here, plenty of folk that will help you out with any questions you have. Marins are nice bikes, I look forward to seeing the before and after pics. Be warned though, once you’re bitten with the bike building bug it kinda takes on a life of its own. Deep pockets, plenty storage space and an understanding wife are needed!

Good luck, J

Hi mate
There’s a wealth of info here
And I’m still learning after 9 years here.
Best thing is to look at some build threads and then pose any questions here

Pretty much none out of 3 there. Terraced house & 2 kids!

Thankfully i have a secure shed in the front garden i can keep it between flurries of working on it on my bike stand in the kitchen whilst my wife is out :).

Re:

Haha, loving it! I’m in kinda the same boat Mark, I’ve got four bikes in the dinning room and one in the hallway. The kitchen is my workshop too. Bonus is... warm, dry, good light, radio and coffee nearby. Downside...... wife hates it lol. I do move outside though if it’s a nice day.

After a frantic search to find the key to the shed, I now have my hands on the bike! Some deep scratches on some of the frame, but doesn’t look like too much rust (apart from chain). Feeling hopeful.

Doesnt look like it will need much to get going, probably just some grease and replace a couple of worn parts. Have you checked the seatpost moves? hopefully it does and that's one main worry out the way
