does a 9 speed front crank work on a 7 speed cassette

Just rebuilt my old Alpinestar, to find that The teeth on my original crank are realy worn. I have spent days trying to find replacement rings Shimano SG C36 / C46. With no luck. So I now want a new crank but times have changed and any decent cranks are now 9 speed. Will they work with a 7 speed cassette.

In a word; yes! However stay with 7-8 width chain.

Second that, been running a 9 speeec deore chainset with 7 speed chain / cassette for years on my commuter. Works fine

Thanks for that. I do want to keep it retro but some spares apear to be in very short supply.

There are plenty of replacement rings from the likes of TA and Stronglight. They also last much longer than the silvery cheese that Shimano make their rings from.
