Do you people wear helmets and gloves??

its kicking off

i love reading the helmet advocates "one big off" where they were fighting bears bare knuckle with a fridge strapped to their back while unicycling down everest

where are these great helmets everyone buys ? all the ones that are certified safe are basically worthless for anything more than 12mph , or a drop on the floor from waist height

shall we start talking about added circumference and rotation injuries ?

its ok tintin ill ride with you anytime , if you fall and get a booboo ill carry you to the hospital , its the decent thing to do after all

well lets just not cycle and stay put in empty soft walled bungalows with rounded edges and padding.

Wearing a helmet does not make you safer in any way. its an old argument that'll never go away. You can do serious brain damage just walking into a door or tripping on the Underground steps.

Most cyclists killed down my way have been obliterated by inatentive drivers or lorries turning left at junctions - they were wearing helmets/ flourescent clothing.

Actively putting yourself into a position where a head injury is likely to occur, ie, jumping, downhill, BMX etc of course requires a helmet, thats obvious.

And it is not selfish to ride without a helmet - thats a bit like saying to joggers that they should carry ans asprin or defibrillator in case of a heart attack.

I feel bad for putting this thread on here now. Sorry guys :( :(

What I have noticed is the crash hat wears are the ones who get very excitied over this subject. And try and force every one to wear a hat. But the non hat wearers are quite relaxed about the issue. :?

Each to there own, i'd advise to wear a helmet, but wouldnt force any one.

After all we all secretly love the wind rushing through our flowing locks on a speedy descent!

Don't apologise, its a sensible question thats been hijacked by people that think that "unicycling down everest" or "making joggers carry a difib machine" are sensible comments.

The fact is that most fatalities from MTBing are caused by head injuries, you can reduce the risk of a serious injury by wearing one. You can also avoid your mates having to deal with a serious head injury if you wear a helmet.

If you want to reduce your risk of serious injury or death and you respect your fellow riders enough to not want them to deal with your bloodied carcass, you'll wear a helmet when you ride off road.

its good to find out who the softies are. ;)

I used to scare people by riding down the A14 dual carriageway to work - I'd be doing about 30mph flat out. I was asked all the time 'what about the lorries?' - the lorries would be passing at about 28mph, there is also a good 1 metre strip between me and the main road so I had a relatively easy time of it.

as this is turning into a for or against ( dont they all  yawn ) lets all wait while the pro helmet wearers cite their sources for these claims

have you seen the state of all those fat joggers??

Helmet requirement = terrain/ speed/ rider skills

Anyone here play cricket? You can play cricket with or without wearing a box.
I would choose to protect the delicate parts of my body, even though I have seen no evidence that they are truly effective.
