Do modern groupsets last less?

Y'all R a bunch of trogodytes. Here's my new to me bike, a 2017 honzo ti with mezcal 2.6. 26.5lbs and kicks much butt.

Sure it'd be possible I could go ride the same trails with the 92 hei hei that lives on my trainer but the lack of disk brakes, tiny tires and pathetic front shock would bruise my oh so baby soft hands. Its a different sport these days.

I simply don't understand what you're going on about reliablity. The old bikes are fine if you're just riding gravel.

I mtb'd in hokkaido in the 90s and all parts were quickly destroyed by the snow and mud.

This is a topic I'm interested in. Has reliability gone down with Shimano groupsets in the last decade?

I have been hearing bad things about the latest 10/11/12 speed gruppos, things like glued crankset arms, chains and cassettes that wear faster than ever before etc.

I know at least some of this is true, because not only the price for 11/12 speed chains and cassettes are very high, I have 3x7 and 3x8 STX and XT groupsets that look and work like new, parts are cheap and they wear out slow when maintained.

But the new stuff? I'm skeptical. Shimano seems to be giving durability for lightness, not to mention custom hub/spoke designs and proprietary mounts for their shifters that change every generation.

Bottom line, I think Shimano quality has started to go downhill while prices have gone up.

In these circumstance, I am more tempted by their lower end gruppos because I hate 1X setups, I don't want to pay for 12 speed cassettes that are huge, ugly and expensive while also lasting less than the older stuff and I tend to believe with the cheaper parts, quality isn't sacrificed for saving a few grams off each part.

Is low end the new high end or should I keep riding my vintage bikes? Because i'm pretty sure the old iron horses with their now vintage groupsets can last me until I retire(maybe not used daily, but).

Wish I could still buy brand new 3x8/2x8 XT and Ultegra stuff, that's all I'm saying.

Anybody else feel the same or I am growing old too soon?

10spd Ultegra and 105 is pretty good but anything lower is very bendy

You'd never snap a 200GS crank.
I still have mine, makes a great plastic coated solid steel hammer.

Currently rocking a 30 but there's room for a 34. Its a mtb, is for going up and then down. Is my first non-singlespeed for 5 years so I'm used to getting spun out at low speed, this thing is comparably fast!

Sure parts are spensive now. Everything is. I paid $5 for a 1/2 gallon of milk yesterday, and I won't mention house prices. A real measure of value? Take that money you invested in high end bikes in 1990 and put it in the sp500, its value today is the actual cost of that vintage gear. I remember buying sedis 8 speed chains for $6, and being pleased by the savings even though they didn't last at all. Swapping worn out cassette cogs from the shops cog board. But todays xx1 chains are incredibly durable, as are those $250 cassettes - as long as you keep them clean!

PS: I hope y'all don't mind my attitude. Is boring watching you all sit around and agree. Someones gotta be the bad guy. I'm the actual troglodite.
