Kent makes great bikes, i also love his previous work, but his frames out of reach for me,..
Incl import duty it will cost me to much
same counts for the even more pretty Pott's

I do not understand

You want your dreambike, are fully commited to get it, but I understand you would like X but it is out your reach. You can't do consessions if you're serious about going for your dreambike. Is the KE not really your dreambike? You dreamt of bikes that are cheaper also? That must be. If not you're not really going for your dreambike, it doesn't make sense to pretent for yourself you're going for it, as you will end up concluding 'I didn't have my dreambike, but a quasi dreambike instead and I want my dreambike so you will be selling my quasi dreambike and buy my dreambike.'

So...
Do you know what your dreambike is?
Are you sure it is achievable?
If positive, would you prefer owning your dreambike over current stable you have to sell to be able to acquire your dreambike?
If negatieve, sell what you don't like and keep the money in the pocket or for whatever you want to do with it.

i never said i wanted X or KE

and a dreambike does not have to be over expensive, i never said that my bike has to be over 10k,..for example i think 5k for a bike is still alot of money.

My dreambike is a bike that i want to own,..with the things, look and feel i want to see in a bike, and if i can do this with my budget, i am fine with it. It does not have to be of a certain builder as long as it is build good and looks great.
I asked for the advise of the members to come up with the names of builders so i can look at their work end see if i make the right desicion.

I am going to sell the bikes i won't be using,..and use the money to get a bike i will be using, it is that simple.
The bikes i am selling are deffo not my dreambikes and i can't care less if they go,..i do not have an emotional bond with them.
For instance; i am selling my Ritchey to Sithlord if all goes well,..which is his dreambike and that is not going to cost him that much money.
I do not think the budget makes it my dreambike....
And in my mind, my dreambike has a ridgid Ti fork,.not that good as a steel one?,..who cares,..i want it,..

and for the record, i have not ordered anything yet so anything is possible
The only bike i won't be selling is the Serotta,..the rest can go.

and regarding X; i have asked him to make me an offer based on the spects i told him, he emaild me back that i would get one the next day,..that is 2 weeks ago, so i can tell you for sure that he won't be buidling it,..

edit; and something else,..i might even have the money to get me a KE or SP,..but i still it has to be realistic,..i can't justify it towards myself to buy a 10K bike,..
For example; my dream car is not a ferrari,..i would be happy with a lot less,....it should make me smile and feel good,..and for that i do not have to spend money ; i certainly won't spend it just to make a statement.

KKK Custom

Many enthusiasts seem to think that by commisioning one of the small volume custom builders, they are buying into something that is well "better" both in aesthetic quality, ride and longevity.

This is not the best choice. I would still go with Merlin, yes they are part of a bigger group now, but thats good-very good! Better funding and technology e.g. they produce their own tubing from their own billet, you can spec 6/4 if you wish, which is superior to 3/2.5 Ti. They have more experience than anyone else (They are not Nasa's main contractor for Ti fabrication for nothing!)
Also should you have to sell on at a later date, they always fetch a better price, as people feel safe with their name.
As far as budget is concerned, I would not worry about the build, just the frame, as components can be upgraded over time.

Nice dilemma Bas :D good thing is that it is you, and only you who is going to decide in the end. Really looking forward to your final choice.
I do think though that if your looking for a new Ti frame that's well build you'll be paying heaps of hard earned cash. Agree with world ranger to focus on the frame (and forks).
I did own a Merlin bitd and can confirm that these are probaly the nicest/best ti frames that you can have (early 90's model) but it's not Custom and you can easily replace it for antother Merlin, so it's not going to give you that "special"feel of ownership imho.
Can you give us a nice list (poll maybe) of the builders/brands you're thinking about at the moment.
cheers Roy

I would get a King Kahuna over a Hei Hei, if you went that route. Less flexy and still light as poo and rides super well. I'm using mine as a rigid ti SS, with the option of an 80mm fork. It's quite a smooth ride with ti forks, bar, stem, seatpost. I´ll be switching everything over to my 17" frame this week, and am pretty stoked about trying that. Probably a better fit for me. :D
