DISSIN THE OLD SKOOOL

Hmmm, I think some have touched on what it really is - there are people out there who like to think they ride well, buy the latest bit of kit and are a little too free and easy with their comments about older bikes, but when push comes to shove they can't hold a candle to a seasoned, all weather MTBer. Yes the bike makes a difference but you can't use that to hide behind any lack of skill. I could provide examples but I think you know exactly what I mean.

Ooh - do I know you Bryan? I used to live in Shoreham, and went to Kings Manor.

I don't think so Terry, I only moved down from Oxford a couple of years ago! Sorry.

Impressed you've got an Ozark though! Brings back memories of pouring over Raleigh brochures after school!

re:

it's even worse on the roadie side of things, they are total snobs!

Fat old guys who stand around in group with carbon out of the box Scales is probarly gonna wrinkle their noses for anything that doesn't have discs or a remotecontrol for the fork, but well being 27years old and sometimes rather fast. I'm not takin it...

I've rode a Giant XTC carbon frame this year, and now I'm back on a retroish frame. Newer bikes aren't faster that is just stupid.

Sure when it's raining it is better to have discs I won't argue with that, and the suspensionforks are better. But I must say if you look at some of the WC bikes they´re getting more and more lowtech with 1x9-10speed and the fact that they still ride HT's. And if you had the oppurtunity to see the Worldchampion race in canberra last weekend, u could see some serious hammering! I don't believe for a second that Absalon would ride slower on his old Bianchi with v's and the old Sid-generation!

I've even heard from friends that they've seen top riders doing training on Rigid HT's...

Thoose guys who tries to put you down, ride the living f*ck out of them as a revenge. You ride what u want to ride! If I wanted a Scale as everybody else, I would get one! but I don't, I like tinkering with old shit.

I love it when retro gets the mickey taken out of it.
1. It drops the price of gear and the loudmouths undersell " yesteryear's " equipment.

2. They look even sillier in the bike shop buying this month's latest bottom bracket, intergrated headset, axle size, etc.

3. [ west country accent ]Them big bouncy rigs is lush in them Alps but 'ere in the woods yous looks just daft![ /west country accent ]

Granted that the modern full sussers can handle trails that are near impossible on a retro stead, but the nature of the sport has changed since our bikes were designed.

These days I see every man & his dog careering off some huge drop on a modern full susser, it's easy when the bike soaks everything up for you & your covered from head to toe in body armour - not quite so easy when you actually have to use skill & technique that's taken years to achieve, 2" of travel & only gloves & a helmet. Things have changed, along with attitudes.

I went on a local organised ride at the start of the summer. There were around 20 riders, all on modern appart from an old boy on a rigid ss marin.
I rode my 1991 Overburys and I could see people looking and passing comment on the newbie with the shite old bike.
It was only when we stopped halfway that one of the older riders realised what I was riding and came over for a chat about it.
I rode everything that the rest did, and some tricky sections that most of them bottled.
I couldn't give a flying what people think of what I ride. I laugh at idiots on full sus who do nothing but ride on canal paths, so it works both ways :D
