Disc Brakes and V-Brakes

xizang, would I be okay with this front disc brake that has been offered and the disc calipers? I would like confirmation that this combination would not require me to change the lever/shifter combination I already have.

If I get a set of maguras next week the disc will be going, if not it'll be going on my Karakoram, once I switch my forks and wheels over. And I won't need to change my levers or shifters as they're seperate units

It may be easier if I switch them over and take pics for you to show what you need to do with your set-up.

Hello, I know it's been a while but I've not changed anything regarding the brakes. I've had the bike serviced a number of times now and things haven't really improved. So I was wondering what v brakes to get for the front and rear? The avids have been discontinued...

i don't think that new v-brakes will change anything because the xtr v-brakes are said to be one of the best. what condition are your brake pads in? how much do you weight? what kind of brake levers do you use? how did the bikeshop mechanic explain the weak braking power?
i'm using v-brakes on my main ride and they are frighteningly strong. thats why i'm sure that there is something wrong with your setup.

At the very least I need new brake pads, they are extremely worn. I weigh 12 stone. What kind of brake levers? What types are there? They look pretty standard to me. They tuned the brakes to the rims that were on the bike at the time, but I put others on because I wanted to use slicks rather than mountain bike tyres. Then the wheel would hardly move because the brake blocks were too close to the wheel so I loosened the brake cable and adjusted the metal things on the ends of the brake levers. That was when I noticed how worn the brake blocks were.

How old are your brake cables ?
They could be giving you trouble if they are old.

surpised to hear that your bikeshop didn't swap the brake pads for new ones. if they are extremly worn i'd get new ones.
ergarding brake levers there are cantilever brake levers and v-brake levers. catnilever brake levers pull less cable. if your brake levers are from the early 90ees they might be cantilever which would not be ideal.
checking the cables - as retroyetirigid - is a good point too.
