disc brake question

Does anybody know what the metal spring plate is for on the back of avid juicy calipers? Is it to retain the little metal tabs on the pads? I know its probably blatantly obvious

It's to hold the pads back against the pistons

Yes holds the pads in. Ba**ards to get the pads into.
