Difference between Specialized M2 models...

I've come across a 15.5" M2 from 98 in a shadow/blue grey colour.

Just wondering if this frame is any different from the s-works team frames?

Also, does anyone know if there were any differences in geo from 95 onwards? They all seem to look the same.

M2

M2 came in too versions the early M2 X and from around 97 onward it was M2XX. I dont think the material was very different but there was more gussetting and they were reputedly a lot stronger where it counted.
All had suspension corrected geometry and the team frames were only M2X.
If you mean team frames such as the ones available to the public with the team sticker on the toptube, these were black decal in 95 and the last was the blue decal in 96.
Cant place the colour but the size is just right ;)
Hope this helps
What are they asking for it, I could swap a larger 96 team frame

Well the one I'm looking at is grey, I want to get it stripped and sprayed red.

So the team frames released to the public were no different from the normal stumpjumper M2?

M2

Hi Emoco
The M2 team frames were S works.
The Stumpjumper is a different model. While both are made of M2 the differences are many, especially geometry.
Stumpjumper and S works came in M2 but there were no Stumpjumper team frames in M2 besides the very early 92,93 proper team racers.
Is the paint original?
The was a really lovely 94 S works in grey
Post a pic if you can. Be nice to see.

So the Stumperjumper M2 from the late 90s is different from the M2 Sworks Team? I thought the geo was the same.

Weren't the M2XX frames double butted and lighter? Could be completely wrong

M2

Hi P20
I think they were both double butted but the XX had the stronger gusseting at the head tube and the main tubes were thinner in some areas. Definately a bit lighter.

This is the frame that sprang to mind from the description of the colour (1996 from Flickr)

M2

P20 - That is a lovely Stumpy, if thats what emocos is like I wouldnt be painting it.
M2 - Heres what I have found so far.
I stand corrected as the geometry is the same for both S works and Stumpy in M2 configuration.
S works and Stumpies of the M2 variety with the handmade in the USA sticker, which I am sure was all, came out of the same factory in Portland Il, Anodising Inc I think it was. The differences are the S works was thinner walled tubing and the paint was better and was generally tweaked a bit better before it left. This would probably be tighter tolerances and alignment. The thinner walled tubing even with the later gusseting made it a lighter frame. It was towards the end of the nineties that Stumpies made of metal matrix, not sure whether it was the end of M2 or the start of M4, moved from the states to taiwan. S works continued to be made in the states.
I have also found over the years that todays S works design will be a Stumpjumper in a year or two's time. The frame may be slightly beefed with thicker walled tubing but will look the same.
2009 Stumpies are the same. The top two models are carbon and have the same flowing top tube as the S works whereas the two M5 (metal) versions still have the older style. These will probably be the same next year. The Stumpies have a thicker weave carbon similar to a S works of two years ago.
A general rule I have found is that the S works is the XC racer and is harsh on an all day ride whereas the Stumpy is a great all day ride that you can also race.
Hope that all makes some sense as it is past my bed time, but needed to correct my earlier post.

Emoco, is the frame above in P20's post the same?
