depression - how do you cope ?

I have been told I need tablets and therapy, I still ain't went down that route, prefer riding alone, even just an hour a few times per week.

I'm like a hermit, shut myself away so I don't trouble others!

CBT sessions have helped me alot.
Sleeping properly and having a routine also helps.

And riding.

+1 for CBT , retrain your brain.

for me realising thoughts are just that, merely thoughts, changed everything. i dont have to entertain them, they are not reality and i can choose what i wish to think about, i used to find a perverse pleasure and comfort in the familiarity of this negativity. let it all go

i now only think about naked ladies and bikes, and sometimes work. sometimes i think about naked ladies on bikes while at work

Riding really does help too

I never completely cope with it, but there are a few things I try and do...

- go for a nice long drive (maybe an hour or two) with my favourite music cranked right up.
- Sell a load of stuff
- Buy a load of stuff
- Build a bike
- Go for a ride

The ride is always the best one for clearing the head, I've found, but the current weather prevents that from happening as often as it should, so I revert to one of the others in the list.

When I had a total breakdown, about 6 years ago, the Doctors and Counsellors made everything a lot worse, so I avoid any of that, now.

Just my own personal experience.

It's hard to deal with!

The best thing I found was to see a counsellor!

This way you may find the initial cause of the problem and get to talk about it and possibly overcome it.

Kind of depends how deep you are :? Personally ive found low but not deep melancholic periods can be worked on by keeping busy, trying to fit as much into a day as possible.
Put a sign up on the back of your door.List things to do from getting up and try to stick to it :? eventually your mind begins to come around to the idea of doing things again.

It's probable that the drugs do work[no Verve links, quotes, etc needed ;)] but something to consider is try to keep major drugs out of your system. These do build in your body over time and personally i dont believe that does you good, quite the reverse.

My experience is that you'll need to try a bit of what everyone has suggested until you find the right formula for you.

You may also need to realise that there's often a root cause, mine was my job. It took me three years of constant trips to the doctors, hospital, counsellor etc to realise this but once I did I was able to put a plan of action into place. I've since left the job, am just about to go back to university and have finally stopped the medication (after over three years).

The most important thing I held on to was that it will get better, you'll still have bad days, but when it's better and you're having a good day you'll notice it far more than you ever did before.

And as it says on the spine of MBR, "Just get out and ride" :D

Stay away from drugs, prozac etc, no alcohol, caffeine, reduce sugars, uppers or downers etc, eat healthy, stay natural, when the cloud comes remind yourself it's not real it's your body playing funny buggers (just a chemical imbalance) talk about it and ride more!!

Everyone has issues that differ from the next, but seeing the state of some of my mates and workmates have got into, I know staying off drink and drugs and stay close to certain reliable people help.

explain to others so that a few know your issues but respect you and watch out for you, too much fussing can make me worse.
