I'd say it's common on Estays - to keep some triangulation in the main frame.
"No chain rattle" was ranked above "whacking your wassnames on the crossbar" in design requirements

What a load of balls... doesn't AI know the different between a V brake, a U brake and cantilevers? No mention of elevated stays either!

Some of you may recall this was up for sale on FB marketplace recently. Different is probably a polite word to describe it. However it's pretty mint, I don't see its ever had much use so was certainly a good buy for the money. I've given it a bit of a clean up and fitted some period correct tyres and saddle. If that stem looks long that's because it is. 150mm is for kids, that's a man sized 170 . Normally when I pick up a bike the first thing I try is does the seat post move, which it does. However on closer inspection there seemed to be some kind of shim stuck in the frame. Turns out...

I always remember picking up the Extreme Comp with XT on it either On your bike in Tooley Street or Covent garden cycles and it weighing an absolute ton!
