Dawes Ranger rehabilitated

Haha that would probably bore you to tears!
But basically I started in Scotland, cycled through England, France, Germany, Austria then behind the Iron curtain as it was then, through Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. Then Greece and Turkey. I had planned to cross Iran and Afghanistan but unfortunately America had just bombed Triploli from UK bases so was denied a visa to Iran so flew to Karachi in Pakistan then went up the newly built Karakoram Highway to Gilgit then down the Swat valley in the North West Frontier province to Peshawar then across to India, up to Nepal then Calcutta then flew to Bangkok down through Malaysia across to Sumatra up to the top of Sumatra then down, through Java, Bali, flew to Darwin then across Australia to Sydney, my destination. I then thought I could not get on a plane and be home within 24 hours so worked for a bit then came back through New Zealand, Hawaii, down California, Mexico, Guatemala, back up through Arizona, over the Rockies up to Canada then down to New York. Flew back to London then short ride back to Scotland.
You did ask🤣

Oh wow, that's amazing, I think if anyone tried that now they'd be murdered 112 times. Thanks for sharing, 27,000 miles makes you the 'Ranger King'.

I am sure people generally would look after you as much now as they did then!
Amazing itinerary. Was it a solo trip? What triggered you to do it? Does sponsored by' mean they gave you the bike or was there any other support involved? Did Dawes expect anything back, publicity-wise? Asking for my 16 year old self, who wanted to do a trip like that more than anything. My 46 year old self likes the idea too, though accepts it's increasingly unlikely!

The long wheelbase was great for touring. This was a 1986 model that Dawes sponsored me with for a 27000 mile round the world trip I did 1986-88. They added extra lugs for the front pannier rack and a third bottle cage. After a few months I changed the chainrings from 26-36/46 to 26/46/50 as I was a bit fitter by then. Never even broke a spoke on the whole trip but the rear rim had cracks developing on each side of every spoke. I still have it for nostalgia state but the frame sadly has a lot of surface rust on it. I also shortened the handlebars to make it marginally better into headwinds.

Sorry this is a little off topic but that is a great photo. That must have been quite an adventure! I lived a mile away from there for about 15 years. Beautiful area, I miss the mountains...

Stunning place to live, I loved cycling there though I remember it being freezing coming down from there!
