Daniel Rebour - Illustrator. Who's your favourite cycling illustrator/Cartoonist?

Who could not know a Jef (with one “F” in his name dropped because it made him lighter)….always makes me laugh.

Le Cyclo seemed a bit of an authoritarian regime, though each edition they did let Rebour do some cartoons. Here's one with a quick critique of 'standardisation'. Though to put the words 'standards ' and French component manufacture together seems pretty futile 🤣 Translation:

Standardisation

Look at this poor frame manufacturer, hesitating in front of his many templates and pigs for brake studs, pump holders, derailleur and dynamo brackets, and so on. Doesn't he have plenty of excuses for making mistakes? How much simpler the work would be if there were a reasonable degree of standardisation!

A little more research about Rebour, he worked from home for the most part (I reckon he couldn't afford an office) and lived a stonesthrow, 500m from La Defence in Paris in this ground floor of a kinda shabby looking 60's block of flats. He married and had one daughter who now administers his archive.

Such was the lot apparently for unappreciated illustrators of the era. As said up thread the unionised scribblers who were writing the copy for his adverts and magazines were earning 3x what Rebour was paid for his meticulous drawings and cartoons. 🤥
