I am looking at a crank that's 130mm BCD and 175mm long with 2 chain rings he's saying it's for a road bike but I was wondering can I put this on my mountain bike keep it as a 2 ring on the front also it's a square taper as well new to this any help appreciate

You can put it on. Smallest inner ring you can fit on a 130bcd is a 38 and you might find it doesn’t clear the stay. If the frame has a brazed-on front derailleur mount it might not be high enough to clear a road outer ring. Very straight road cranks might not clear the stays without a very wide bottom bracket. All depends on the frame though, you’ll only really find out by trying.

Might need a longer bb to clear the stay and the tyre otherwise square taper is much more adaptable road/mtb than modern ht2 and similar
